Nashville based saxophonist Chris West has recently released his self produced recording “Trilogy.” In addition to West playing all saxophones and winds, he is joined by a large cast of musicians who contribute to the sound of several different ensembles – large and small. Most notably West is joined by fellow saxophonists Don Aliquo and Jeff Coffin.
The opening track is a bit deceptive with its traditional New Orleans second line groove not to be heard on the later cuts. Instead, Chris West blends together a cross section of favorable arrangements that include the hard-swinging Maybe, the Latin toe-tapper Times Up and even the saxophone quartet feature Rude Awakening.
From traditional swing to stompin’ and funky – Chris West offers something for lovers of jazz saxophone set to many differing styles.
