Recently I was made aware of Andrew Neu’s new transcription Best of Michael Lington: The Songbook Collection. At Andrew’s request Andreas Buchel of PrintSound Music Publisher was kind enough to send the book as well as many of the current publications for review on SaxShed.com. The many publications are all worthy of mention and a brief description can be found below.

The Best of Michael Lington – The Songbook Collection

Saxophonist Michael Lington is well represented by fellow saxophonists Andrew Neu and John Odio. Neu and Odio have paired with PrintSound Music Publisher to release Best of Michael Lington: The Songbook Collection. The collection of some of Lintgon’s most memorable music is beautifully realized in pictures, printed music and background tracks.

Andres Neu’s transcriptions are clearly notated and accurate as one would expect. The twist with this transcription book is the inclusion of background tracks. John Odio has put together a wonderfully crafted set of backing tracks to accompany the transcribed solos. Dare I say some sax players may be tempted to use these on single gigs?

The hefty collection includes Tell It Like It Is, Twice In A Lifetime, Sunset (Por Do Sol), Still Thinking of You, Off The Hook, Show Me, Two Of A Kind, Pacifica, It’s Too Late, You and I and Ocean Drive.

One final note on the binding of this 154 page book: The scored lines on the binding are a welcome addition while trying to keep the thick book open on the music stand. Nice touch.

Saxophone Duets, Trios and Quartets by PrintSound Music Publisher

PrintSound Music Publisher has also released several new pieces for 2, 3 and 4 saxophones. The flexible instrumentation allows for standard and nonstandard duet and trio settings. Parts are included for soprano, alto and tenor or AAT, etc. Ave Maria by William Crake and Andrew Neu’s Slipstream are just two of the quartet pieces. The trios include Pavane op. 50, Pavane pour une Infante Defunte, Regresa a Casa, Panis Angelicus and Saxy Weihnacht. The Entertainer, Swing Low, Sweet Chariot, Dixieland for Saxduett and Summertime/A Foggy Day round out PrintSound’s duet catalog.

John Odio – Lluvia

Saxophonist John Odio has paired with guitarist Walter “Chepe” Blanco to record Lluvia on Akusticos Records. The short, five song Cd features the two on sax and guitar respectively; however no credit is given for any additional musicians. The recording features Odio on alto and soprano saxophone in both smooth jazz and Latin styles.
