Alto saxophonist Patrick Cornelius has recently released “Maybe Steps” on Posi-Tone Records.
In addition to Cornelius on alto saxophone, the jazz recording features Peter Slavov, bass; Miles Okazaki, guitar; Gerald Clayton, piano; Kendrick Scott, drums; and Assen Doykin, piano on track 9.
Although I could only offer a partial listening as of this writing, it was immediately clear that Patrick Cornelius is another fine young saxophonist to be featured on Posi-Tone Records. His sound is sweet, lines are lyrical and he has surrounded himself with a cast of outstanding sidemen.
My initial observation is echoed by the comments in the press release provided by Marc Free of Posi-Tone. He writes, “ This exciting musical program features Cornelius’ brilliant original compositions presented by an amazing group of players…Critical listeners will agree that Cornelius’ compositions and performances clearly demonstrate both his command of the saxophone and his functional mastery of the jazz idiom.”
