Legendary saxophonist “Blue Lou” Marini, best known worldwide as an original member of
the Saturday Night Live Band and The Blues Brothers Band, proudly announces the release of PLAYTIME, the debut album from his new jazz, soul, and blues supergroup, LOU MARINI AND THE ITALIAN GROOVERS. The band features top-tier Italian musicians joining Marini to deliver this highly anticipated instrumental collection.
The new album PLAYTIME showcases Marini’s signature expressive saxophone voice, at the forefront of a dynamic international ensemble. Blending sophisticated jazz sensibilities with soulful grooves and blues energy, the instrumental record highlights the chemistry between Marini and some of Italy’s finest musicians according to Marini “I felt an instant bond with this Trio and they knock me out every night”. Marini’s Italian Groovers are Lou Marini-Sax and Flutes, Gianluca Di Ienno-Hammond Organ, Enzo Zirilli-Drums, Allesandro Chipetta-Guitar .
Often referred to as an “unsung jazz hero,” Marini is a platinum recording artist, virtuoso multi- instrumentalist, composer, arranger, educator, and producer. Renowned for his chameleon-like adaptability across jazz, rock, blues, and classical music, he has performed and recorded with an extraordinary list of icons, including Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, The Rolling Stones, Tony Bennett, Billy Joel, B.B. King, Eric Clapton, Dr. John, Frank Zappa, Steely Dan, and many more. A fixture on the New York music scene since the early 1970s, Marini’s credits include stints with the Woody Herman Orchestra, Blood, Sweat & Tears, The Band, Levon Helm & the RCO All-Stars, and James Taylor’s Band of Legends. His memorable saxophone work and on-screen appearances in The Blues Brothers and its sequel, along with his iconic solos on Saturday Night Live (including the famous “King Tut” sketch), have made him a beloved figure in both music and popular culture.
A native of Ohio, Alumni of North Texas State and longtime Manhattan resident, Lou Marini, Jr. is
a six-decade veteran of the music industry whose work spans recordings, major tours, television, and film. At 81 years of age, he continues to perform, compose, and mentor young musicians while maintaining an active touring schedule with The Blues Brothers Band ,James Taylor, and his newest band, Lou Marini and the Italian Groovers. Lou was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 2012.
