Saxophonist Jeff Coffin and drummer Jeff Sipe have again teamed up to release “Jeff Coffin & The Mu’tet LIVE!” on Ear Up Records. The two Jeffs released “Duet” earlier this year on Compass Records. The newer release on Ear Up features a powerful set of hard driving and funky selections that feature the two Jeffs once again.
Jeff Coffin and Jeff Sipe are joined by a large cast of musicians on “Jeff Coffin & The Mu’tet LIVE!” Son of Jaco, Felix Pastorius, bass; Kofi Burbridge and Chris Walters, piano; Bill Fanning, trumpet and Mike Seal, guitar. Additional credits go to Joe Caploe, percussion; Leonice Shinneman, kanjira and Rob Bloch on guitar.
Many may know Jeff Coffin from his long-standing position with Bela Fleck and the Flecktones and more recently his collaboration with the Dave Matthews Band. A short trip to google.com will unearth a plethora of clips displaying Coffins talents in a variety of styles and settings.
The setting here on “Jeff Coffin & The Mu’tet LIVE!” is that of a live jam session in front of an audience. There are two Cds worth of heavily improvised “fusion” music for lack of a better description. The first two Cds feature 8 Coffin originals. Among the 8 funky tracks are three originals where Coffin shares compositional credit with others among the band.
The focus on this recording is clearly on the improvisation and interaction of the group, rather than the showcasing of elaborate compositions. Each member in the group maintains a considerable and enviable amount of chops. Of particular note, Felix Pastorius is a wonderful bass player. However, it is difficult not to make comparisons to his late father of the same surname. Additionally, pianist Kofi Burbridge performs some tasteful solos on jazz flute.
