With Christmas and holiday music resonating all around it wasn’t difficult to begin to feel the spirit of the holidays. The idea hit me that I should compile and arrange duets for my own woodwind students and even my family to play at the holidays.

Ideas on Duet Playing – The teacher/student relationship was always at the forefront of my mind as I penned these relatively simple duets. Sax 1, Flute 1 or Clarinet 1 is typically played by the student and Sax 2, Flute2 or Clarinet 2 by the teacher. Conversely, many woodwind students certainly can handle either part. It is my intention that all levels of players from novice to professional can find these duets a welcome addition to their holiday collections.

The utilization of this Christmas carol Deck the Hall provides an opportunity to work with some hopefully familiar material for students and less experienced players. Within this duet that same melody is interspersed with independent rhythmic content, harmonic material and key modulations. The suggested dynamics, articulations and breath marks are intended to aid less experienced players in better phrasing — yet leaving plenty of room for personal interpretation by each player.

Playing duets is always a fun way to practice sight-reading with students. Each year around Thanksgiving I use seasonal duets to sightread with students. It now is a tradition to have our family perform duets while gathered at the holidays. Playing these with my family is the best gift of all. My hope is playing this seasonal duet can bring joy to others as well!
