One Response to Tom Scott – Black Cow

Hi, and thanks for submitting your transcription. Interesting to see what a player like Tom Scott delivers on a Steely Dan-tune. His light and quite bluesy L.A. pop sax style shows quite a contrast both in phrasing and tonal language compared to some of the other notable sax soloists employed by the Dan (Christlieb, Woods, Shorter, Brecker, Potter, Weiskopf).

I was searching for a transcription of this solo as a reference for an upcoming gig, and found it quite useful. I feel that the style of the vamp and the quite busy melodic background parts demand this kind of economic, clear and very singing statement.

If you don’t mind, I’d like to share the correct set of chord changes to this nice little vamp – for Bb instruments: Bmaj7 – B13sus4 – E13sus4 – Bmaj7 A6/9.
Some would perhaps interpret the 13sus4 chords as slash chords (A/B, D/E).

Oh, and Donald Fagen’s last name is spelled F-A-G-E-N. Again, thanks for sharing!
