Skip Spratt of The Sax ShedSkip Spratt
, originally from the Boston area, has been teaching and performing in New Jersey since 1985.

After attending Berklee College of Music in Boston, he spent three years as a Saxophonist touring throughout the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. Since settling in New Jersey, Skip has performed with Natalie Cole, Tony Bennett, Johnny Mathis, Aretha Franklin, Donna Summer, The Temptations, Jeffrey Osborne, Tommy Tune, Ben Vereen, Joel Gray, The 5th Dimension and others. His recording credits include sessions for Patti LaBelle, Teddy Pendergrass, Bobby Rydell and he can be heard on jingles for KYW Radio, WPVI Channel 6 and Bally's Park Place. In 1990 he had the honor of performing for Barbara Bush in the Senate Caucus Room in Washington.

Skip holds a (BM) with honors in Jazz Saxophone and an (MAT) in Music Education from The University of the Arts, and a Certificate from Berklee College of Music in Boston. He is the instrumental music teacher at Berlin Community School, Secretary of the NJ-IAJE and has taught saxophone at Rowan College. Skip resides in South Jersey, where he teaches Saxophone, Flute and Clarinet.

*Tthese are audio clips from semi-recent gigs. The quality speaks for itself, however the ensemble playing is worth a listen. Most of the clips are from a gig on the Battleship New Jersey on the Delaware River the summer of 2002. It was a great setting to play some jazz while people checked out the surroundings. - Imagine the beautiful sunset while listening to some great jazz in the company of good friends...

Skip's Equipment

Skip's sax set up consists of three Selmers:

  • Soprano: Super Action 80, Series III, Yanagisawa 7 mouthpiece, Vandoren #3 reeds
  • Alto: Mark VI - 190xxx (1971), Dave Guardala Studio mouthpiece (1987), Vandoren Java #3 reeds
  • Tenor: Mark VI - 164xxx (1969). Guardala Michael Brecker (1987), Vandoren Java or V16 reeds


Current Doubling set ups are as follows:

  • Artey Piccolo - rather old, but it plays great!
  • Yamaha 581H Flute (Low B) - about 10 years old and sounds sweet! Original Headjoint.
  • Buffett R-13 Clarinet - 65,xxx (old, but not "blown out") Marcellus MO8 mouthpiece, V12 #3 1/2 reeds.
  • Yamaha WX7 Midi Wind Controller - purchased new in 1987
